Poor old Adachi. Such a letdown for him, I imagine. Really like it so far, you've really put across just how... horribly bleak everything is.

And now I strangely want to see more Adachi/Nanako.

[Typo fix in first part: *he’s stopped looking…]

---

Houses change less than their owners. Without the ability to adapt, they remain constantly antiquated. The Dojima residence is still quaint, small, and reeking of a presence that isn’t there, but used to be. It’s worse now that Nanako has moved out, leaving Dojima alone to brew his own coffee every morning, and leave the lukewarm half-cup beside the kitchen sink until it stains the inside with dark brown rings.

“There’s a futon in the guest room. You have to roll it out by yourself,” says Dojima, throwing the house keys on the couch as his daughter’s car pulls away on the street. Adachi hasn’t moved from the doorway. He only vaguely remembers this place, eating sushi in the living room, dragging his tipsy partner to the couch, thinking about whether or not Dojima’s nephew could fit in that television in the corner.

“What are you doing?” asks Dojima, turning around, in the way that means Why are you still standing there? instead of It better not be murder. Adachi blinks ( ... )

Dojima comes home at around nine (probably got off about seven-thirty), which is earlier than he (they) used to come home, but years are not without their burden, and he’s no longer of the age or obsessive determination to pull overtime every day. It is foggy in Inaba now that yesterday’s rain stopped, and on the way home, Dojima finds himself glancing up at empty antennae until he pulls into his driveway ( ... )

[Thank you for the anon comments! I am grateful that you like this!]Dojima doesn’t know when the first time happened, but it must’ve been during the first two weeks, just as he started thinking that maybe he should fall into the habit of labeling his food again, because lately, pudding’s been disappearing from the top shelf ( ... )
