You're not horrible cat owners - you just don't realize that they are the ones in charge. And, thankfully, they may be too young to realize that, too. Yes, vet care for cats is expensive - and the fact that you know this already indicates that you're responsible cat owners (see?). Just count yourselves lucky if you can avoid cat dental work, that's expensive.
Cats, inevitably, want to go where they will not want to be - it's just cat logic, weirdly enough. You'll do great though. Have they picked out sunny spots for napping yet?
Sadly (see note on who's in charge) they mostly like to nap on my boobs or ideally my neck. We haven't really had that much sun since we've got them but they do like to hide under things to sleep (like in the tiny little gap underneath my piano or under the computer desk.
I've had a look at Rico's mouth and I can see the little hole his tooth has poked in his bottom lip, I'm hoping that might be something he'll grow out of and, given your comment about dental work, that it won't need something doing to it.
The mouth wound will likely heal (at least that's my anecdotal experience). Do they eat your hair? Some cats (thankfully, not mine) like the protein in hair...which is just weird. I hope you get some sunlight for the kitties - I know ours enjoy it quite alot.
