Sorry, specific prompt. Kanji, instead of joining the group, becomes your typical troubled teen. He fights, cuts class, and fights daily with his inner demons. After getting in trouble for the last time, Yasogami High puts him in a new experimental delinquent program. He has to spent at least one hour daily with a terminally ill patient at the hospital until the patient signs paper work affirming that the delinquent made them more comfortable in their final days. (or dies.) Bonus points for Kanji/Teddie, Kanji/Naoto. Thanks in advance!

"Oh! Kanji, how was your first day at the hospital?" Kanji looked up as he was kicking off his boots; his mother, just having closed up shop, came to greet him. Her calm posture and the elegance she exuded, with her traditional kimono and polite Japanese attitude towards guests, might fool anyone else in town. But Kanji was her son, had seen her through the good and the bad

Kanji rubbed his reddened eyes as he lumbered up the stairs. He wasn't gonna cry; men didn't do that, even when their moms were involved. Even if they said such sentimental crap, and...
Pretty much were the best moms in the world that their piece of shit sons didn't deserve.
Kanji let out a deep sigh when he walked into his room, dark-colored, studded paraphernalia that he didn't care about contrasting greatly with pastel-colored, fluffy plush toys that he did. He sat down on his bed, hunching over as he pinched the bridge of his nose. Lots of shit had happened in the last few days, and really, the fact that he was handling it at all without....Flipping out, or something, was a miracle to him.
Despite being relatively calm, he picked up one of his pillows, a clean-smelling, cotton-soft, ruffled piece of his own creation that he generally hid under a black silk pillowcase, on the off chance anyone went into his room.
Not that the rest of the fluffy, cute shit wouldn't give you away.Kanji frowned, tossing the pillow up and down

“Tatsumi-kun.”
Kanji, face down on his desk atop his open history book, didn’t seem to register the voice calling his name in the least. The only sign to signify that any part of him acknowledged the call of his name was a very subtle easily miss able eyebrow twitch. Even then, of course, he was face down on his book. It likely wouldn’t be noticeable even if he was conscious.
Which he very much wasn’t.
Ms. Sofue tapped her foot with a slight impatient air; although, there was some sympathy in her look, something not too many of the students likely registered. After all, she knew Kanji had just started his student turn-around program, and might have gotten absorbed in that. The fact that he was here at all was practically a miracle in itself, and she wondered if, perhaps, it was already working.
“Tatsumi-kun, please wake up; you’re in the middle of class, not your bedroom.” She emphasized this with a few quick, sharp, loud taps of a ruler right next to his ear, and he shot up, eyes tinted red with lack of sleep, entirely unfocused

From beside him, Kanji saw a slight movement in his peripheral vision. He made a quick, jerking movement of his arms unconsciously that shut the bag, but the wide girth of the plush toy could not really be hidden; it really was quite large, bigger than what he normally made.
He stayed dangerously still for a few seconds, hoping that his tense, angry demeanor chased off any prying eyes.
Apparently not, however, because after some more movement and the scratching sound of a pencil making quick, light strokes on paper, the note found its way to his desk, folded up into a vow of secrecy. Kanji slowly reached for it, glancing up a few times to make sure Sofue’s back was still turned. He took the note, unfolding it carefully.
Did you make that?Kanji’s cheeks flushed a heavy red, and he glared over to his left. Naoki Konishi, eyes straight ahead on the teacher, made a few sneaking glances at Kanji, entirely unfazed by his glare

It was silly, of course, and a little vain, but Kanji wanted that praise fiercely, and to hopefully make Teddie happy with his own handiwork.
The bus seemed to crawl all the way to the hospital, and Kanji, energy abundant and overflowing in his excitement, wondered briefly if he could walk faster than the damn hunk of scrap metal. He decided not to try it, however, and when he arrived to the hospital bus stop, he had to sit down and steady his nerves with a quick cigarette to keep from sprinting through the building. The secretary, the same as yesterday, he remembered, greeted him with a bright smile when he walked in, but wrinkled her nose at the lingering smell of tobacco on his person

"Ooo! Present, present!" Teddie beamed, eyes meeting Kanji's with the most grateful look he'd ever seen; more excited than a little kid at Christmas, and so damn thankful that Kanji had to look away as he flushed.
"W-well, ya gotta let me get it out, ya little dork!" he laughed, opening his pack. He took a moment to pull the plush out from the bag, but it came out with only a small bit of snag before it came free.
The moment Teddie got his hands on the plush, Kanji felt an intense surge of emotions from the boy; so many, all at once--the bright-eyes look of excitement, the wide grin of thrill...and then his eyes were filling with tears, and Kanji panicked, eyes wide as he feared over what he might have done wrong.
"Uh...T-Teddie, are you..." But Teddie had buried his face into the big plush, thin, bony shoulders shaking, and Kanji heard the hiccupping sobs.
"This..." Teddie hiccupped, voice muffled by the plush. "This is the best gift...I..." He looked up, face so happy and grin so wide through the tears that Kanji never once

Sayoko seemed to look over the items for a few moments. Eyed them. Her eyes kept flickering back to the cigarettes. She reached forward, picking them up.
"You make Teddie presents." It was a statement, not a question. "Cute plush toys. The sewing kit tells me that much." She paused, taking in a deep breath, as if she knew the answer, but didn't want to ask it. She held up the cigarettes. "Do you smoke these while you work on them?"
Kanji stared at her numbly for a few minutes. Wondered what she was getting at. Was more terrified he might know.
It smells like you, Kanji!"N....No, I....Ma doesn't let me smoke in the house...." he said softly, very quietly, shaking. He went pale, and his eyes widened. "Oh...Oh god...But.....I've smoked around 'em...O...On the way to the hospital...I..." He stared up at her, horror in his eyes. "Sayoko-san....You...You sayin'....I did that to 'im...?" Sayoko closed her eyes. Took in a deep breath

Oh, my lovely, lovely anon. This is just beautiful in all representations of the word. You mingle with imagery and wrap us up in your incredibly well-written story. And you do tell one hell of a story.
