You know, financial diets are kind of like food diets - the stricter you limit yourself, the more likely you are to snap and binge eventually. Maybe you'd be more successful if you set yourself a small budget for "fun" expenditures. Even something like $5 or $10 a week. If you don't use it one week, great, you can roll it over to next week and have a bit more to spend. But that way you don't have to feel guilty about spending less than a dollar (!?) on your child. Take it out in cash and put it in a separate envelope in your purse. That way you don't have to worry about keeping track of how much you've spent or how much has accumulated... you know if there's money in that envelope you're allowed to spend it, if there's not you've used your budget for the week.

Just a thought. :)
