I personally find it really disturbing. I'm not even really decided about pro life/pro choice, but this is just ridiculous. Not to mention the kind of reputation it gives art majors.
i didn't read the article you linked to (so i don't know if it mentions this), but elsewhere i read that yale administrators are saying the student told them it is all fake - that she did not inseminate herself or take any hormones/drugs. of course, the student denies ever stating this, and does bring up the good point that (if she did inseminate herself) she never really knew if she were pregnant or not (well, i guess she could've taken tests, but she says she did not).
but, yah, it's still sketchy and just another reason for parents to think "art school" is for freaks.
First off, this does not give art majors any worse of a reputation. Pretty much at the bottom anyways. Kidding...hah hah hah...
Seriously though, I have mixed feelings. I mean it is her body. So like, if she voluntarily does it, I am not sure it bothers me as much, as say someone being exploited as free labor or another way without their consent. And although I really never understood the shock aspect of art, as in art that has been created exclusively for shock value, and that is its artistic value, it is a means of pushing past boundaries and changing perspectives.
