Sometimes the most terrifying things have no rational basis, I think. It can't be fun having a deep fear of something that other people laugh at -- so kudos for the bravery in sharing that.
I've never heard of someone else with a radiator fear, but I can certainly understand it. For me, it was the old register vents (you know, the ones with the slats in the floor). They terrorized me as a kid and I'm glad they're mostly obsolete (at least here in the South).
Phobias are phobias because they don't make sense. It sounds to me like you've got a good handle on it in your own way.
Huh. That's what we have in our (40-year-old) house in Denver. What pains to clean. And one of the cat's claws got stuck in it once. And you can hear anything that happens downstairs from upstairs (real fun when you have my sensitivity and a parent who loves to leave the TV on loud late at night because of course he isn't losing his hearing). I totally flipped out the first time I saw a radiator. I was 6 or so and had no idea what it was or how it worked.
I think it comes out of the whole "too much heat being sent up" and mother attacking the things with a wrench and the covers falling off from not being put back on very well...
I'm certainly not going to laugh at you over this. One of my schools had the old radiators with all the coils - damn things made the strangest noises sometimes. Would've scared the hell out of me to have one in the house.
Plus I used to have a friend that was terrified of cotton so yours isn't the oddest phobia I've ever heard of.

Well, they can be creepy, what with their deep dark exterior and millions of hiding places for evil creatures...
