Oktoberfest Bottled
Finally got around to bottling my Oktoberfest brew. It ended up spending about 4 weeks in the primary fermenter, as opposed to the 2 weeks I had planned. Basically, life got in the way. But the extra time shouldn't hurt any ( Read more... ) -

Anyway, as I explained earlier, my last batch, the Blonde Ale, came out somewhat disappointing. The main culprit, I'm convinced, is that the temperature in my basement was too cold for the yeast to really do their thing. Yes, like many of you I find myself posting less to LJ and spending most of my time on Facebook. I know it ain't right, but...

ZOMG! YAY! WHEE! ((burp))
The stout totally rocks.
It's carbonated. It's thick. It's flavorful. It's still opaque. I'd totally buy it if it were for sale. If I ordered it at a bar, I'd order a second. Since I'm not at a bar, I'll just have to put another one on ice. 'Cause this is damned good beer.

Stout Bottled
We bottled the stout tonight and I took the Final Gravity reading.
For those of you who recall when I brewed this beer, it came out much darker than I had anticipated. And it also came out heavier - an Original Gravity reading of 1.066 instead of an expected 1.059, which means 6.6% more dense than water, and about 12% more dense than I had ( Read more... ) -

So, if you read the last entry (and actually paid attention to the recipe), you will have noticed that the Original Gravity of the stout was supposed to be 1.058. This means that the beer is 5.8% more dense than water, owing to the sugars and proteins dissolved in it.
