It was an action notice on the portal when the Trenta size was officially going in to use. It was very specific about the only beverages being put it it, and that it wouldn't ring up anything else. The JSY, which is included in every communication about new launches and time sensitive offers, stated that ANYTHING else sold in these is to be rang in as 2 grandes and to TELL this to the customer first. No one thing is expensive, to you or I. As a business we aren't 7-11 and if everyone does it once, that's the beginning of conditioning customers to throw another temper tantrum when someone who read the action item adheres to company policy. IMS is designed to control ordering and this is flirting with throwing off on hand quantities. For stores in my district this is already a nightmare due to year round fluctuations is tourism and conventions. So in a sense none of us get paid to decide what is a "big deal", for us everything is a BIG DEAL

If it took a rather lengthy and holier-than-thou explanation such as this, then it must be quite complicated.
Also, no matter how many action items come up that we are required to adhere to, there's always the JSY (and customer recovery) to consider - which is to the partner's discretion. Hence, different partners will deal with this differently. Hence, the need for the poster to ask about it here. And hence, the varying answers and opinions from baristas from all over the world.
IMHO, one thing that Starbucks tries so hard to accomplish and yet fail at just as much is consistency.
