I charge the for the correct drink. There's a woman who orders a doppio dry espresso macchiato with foam to the top, and every single time she argues with me about my correctly charging her for a double short cappuccino. It's the stores that let JSY apply to everything that make customers such pains in the ass- if they can get away with it at another store, they feel all righteous and indignant when I deny them.

It should be said, though, that I'm a shift and my SM is basically never around, so I probably have more freedom to Just Say No. I'd say stick to your guns unless your SM has a problem with it.

I have a few super-regulars that I let slide with little things like charging a doppio and not an americano or whatever... but that's because they were here before i got here, and they kind of just got grandfathered in - it's better to have their regular less-money than fight about them and lose them as a customer.

everyone else? screw 'em, they get to pay the actual price.

i've had people ask to get rung in a certain way ("could you charge me milk add eggnog? not steamed eggnog?") and they get the "if it's a base drink button that's on my till, then that's what i press" talk.

one guy actually told me i was mistaken for not charging him a tea misto and instead charging him a tea latte. He said I must be new. I've been with the company for five years, buddy.

I don't work for starbucks but at Caribou we charge them whichever way is cheapest. I.E. we have a "Berry White Mocha" drink that allows us to select any flavor syrup, so any mocha with a flavor shot gets rung up as a "berry white mocha" and then as we select the specs we can pick the other kind of chocolates or flavors instead. This is the company policy, though, and it's set up such that the right way IS the cheapest way. We get customers asking for a small in a med cup or whatever to add milk from the mix-in station, or for extra whip. On our registers they will be charged for us hitting the "extra whip" button so I feel like that adjusts for the difference if we put it in a bigger cup. If we don't hit the button, it pretty much just won't get done on bar, so ringing is always pretty fair that way...

TL;DR we always go with the cheapest way to ring, but that's also usually the simplest.

I always just repeat the correct drink back to them until they get the point that I'm going to be charging them for that. "Oh, you mean a solo venti latte." "So you want a solo venti latte." "Solo venti latte then." "Okay, so that's a solo venti latte."

They get charged for what they're ordering, no matter what interesting language they try to use to get around it.

If a tall is put in a venti sized cup, you only give them 12oz of liquid. They only paid for the tall amount, therefore they only RECEIVE the tall amount.

A tall latte in a grande cup with milk to the line is a "solo venti latte". NO IF ANDS OR BUTS.
