The best BBQ in... Mumbai?

Feb 27, 2008 12:35

So, I was poking around on the Internet (menupages.com, specifically) and came across this little gem in the user-submitted reviews for Hill Country, a relatively new BBQ place here in New York that bills itself as authentic north Texas BBQ.  (Yes, Michelle and I both think the place is merely average)

I think you now need to make a menupages posting on Saravanaas that says "I am from Texas, so I know what authentic South Indian food tastes like. And let me tell you, Saravanaas is as authentic as you will find in New York City. The idli are to die for. The moist uttapam is delicious. Only thing I would change about this place is the menu, makes no sense. Overall I love this place, makes me feel like I am back home deep in the heart of Texas."

see, i'm not so sure. the review was posted way back in july and if you look at the reviews that predated it, you won't find many of the "i'm from texas ergo i'm an expert" type reviews, so not really much to poke fun at.

Urm... so, it tastes like Mumbai BBQ and not N.TX BBQ... I can insert several smartass respond here, but I digress...

Almost as good as the time I bought a friend an Italian coffee in Melbourne, and she spent the whole time bitching about how horrible it was, because: "I work in Starbucks! I know what GOOD COFFEE tastes like."

I just surfed over from mich's...That Mumbai review is to die for! But how can you think Hill Country is merely average?! I love that place to bits. The moist brisket is as good as any in the hill country (the other stuff, not awesome). I don't claim to be a Texan expert, but I have worshipped at the Kreutz temple in Lockhart and while Hill Country isn't as good, it is definitely above average when compared to Blue Smoke and Daisy May's and other BBQ places in NYC :P I can't wait to try Wildwood though - that skillet of cornbread looks awesome.

Ok, I digress. I've added you btw!

Hate it. Hate it hate it hate it. I'll let Ben tell you why, he's the expert. I just know i hate it. Flabby and oily - I hate the mouthfeel. *shudder* Serving me a slice of pure fat does not count as "marbled moist brisket".

I have been to HC five times (I'm getting quite addicted to brisket)...I agree with you about all the other meats. I've tried all of them and they were all pretty ordinary. The sides are pretty sucky - once I had a mac and cheese which was cold and the cheese was clumpy. I actually think the sausages are really greasy. But the brisket is a thing of beauty! It's true that the fat on the moist brisket is excessive at HC - in Texas there doesn't seem to be more than a slip of fat - but the brisket I've had was always really juicy and well-marbled (once I trim off the fat ( ... )
