Does it put the scene into context, perchance? I'm waiting for the volume paperback, which is gonna be a few months. So far, all the reviews I've read make it sound like Buffy walks in on the scene, and we don't see the beforehand or the aftermath.
We definitely don't see the aftermath, but the lead-up is there, if a little headfakey and misleading. Dunno how specific you want me to get, but it isn't just out of the blue. Of course, I think they've been laying the groundwork since the centaur days...
I could've done with a skosh more buildup or aftermath with it, although they'd been laying the groundwork since Giant!Dawn and possibly even back in season 7's pep talk. But all in all, I'm okay with it. I have that little corner of my brain that likes to see someone get the warm fuzzies from a long-time crush.
What I'm not buying is this whole, "Oh, hey, let's not be magic anymore" riff. Bah.
Yeah, I had that moment myself recently. Just did a re-read on the comics, and was like "Oh, shit, I don't think I realized Ethan got a bullet to the face... I guess he's not Twilight."

Dawn/Xander or Buffy/Xander? Or something else entirely?

I guess at the moment, I'm kinda feeling Dawn/Xander more, but honestly I'd be happy with either.
Thanks!

Second? Xander/Dawn. I'll spare the squee, but it's been a kink of mine since back when it was really squicky.

I still think there's a massive Reset Button coming along soon enough though.
