Not really a poll poll: cars, and Al Gore's new documentary

Jun 10, 2006 22:23

I've got a 12 year old Honda Accord with 175,000 miles on it. I've kept it maintained and it's been a great car, but ( Read more... )

So, in case I was unclear, I think it's an okay car.

No - really? :D

I stopped to see if a Honda dealer had the Civic hybrid in stock, and they did not. The salesperson went to get the keys to the Civic sedan, did the lingering bit (where he was gone for more than 10 minues), and I got irritated and impatient and left. I really do like the looks of the Civics, though; the 2006 is way sexier than the previous year's model.

What color did you pick?

I went to Rosenthal at Tysons. Did not care for the sales guy. Leesburg Honda didn't have them in stock either. Thanks for the suggestions, though!

I'm actually trying to make my mind up on a Prius I looked at last night, which I'm sure will be gone shortly (and no one else has them in stock -and it takes a month or more if you order). Decisions, decisions! :p

I'm driving a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am... I like it tolerably well, but it's starting to act rather wierd. (Something with the electrical system)

I've avoided Hybrids for a simple reason. There's no one out here who is trained in working on them, so getting it fixed if necessary would be a nuisence. Also, 95% of my driving is full up highway driving, where they have less advantage.

If I could buy anything? I'm not sure. I'd like to take a good look at a Pontiac Vibe, but I'm not sure about the legroom... I'm 6'1", and so I need a great deal of legspace, especially my typical Sunday includes 190 miles and over 3 hours on the road.

As to Gore's movie, the main review I've cared about is that the people at RealClimate seem to like it (http://www.realclimate.org/)

I noticed when I was home last (KY) that I didn't see any hybrids; it made me wonder how many were in the rest of the center of America.

The Vibe's a nice looking car - American car makers are really doing well with the designs lately. Wow on your Sundays. Again, when home last, I went to church and our minister looked a bit rung out - three churches (although not as many miles as you).

And thanks for the review rec - I'll check it out!

I love my vibe. It gets great gas milage and is very roomy. Drew fits in it at 6'2". It is a GM/Toyota car, the styling is GM but it has Toyota guts. It took some getting used to because things like the windshield controls are backwords, and the airflow from the heat/air is not quite to my liking.

We've talked about hybrids, and while I guess you do save on gas, they aren't cost effective enough for us to think about one yet. We're just going to continue ruining the environmnent with our truck because we haven't even paid it off yet.

Do you know that airplane fuel prices have not increased like gas has? We're just going to fly everywhere from now on. Also, if my dad knew that you were wanting to drive to KY with 175,000 on your car, he would pass out, even though he's never met you. He FREAKS at that stuff. I just keep any car problems to myself to save him the worry and xanax.

See, this is what I get from home. Honest to god, I think the car would be FINE. I suppose I should feel lucky I got this many years from it without them physically driving out here and removing the keys from my hands.

Although, you know that the fed tax credit for this year is $3200 on some models, which is a nice offset ( ... )

2000 Honda CRV with 65,400 miles. I love it. It's a small SUV (shorter in length than some sedans), gets decent mileage (it's a 4-cylinder engine), and is a Honda, so I expect it to last long enough to be my kids's first car. :) It's roomy enough for the kids, a friend for each of them, and all their crap in the back. I can fold all the back seats down and have room for a bike or half an apartment's worth of clothes. :D

If I had the money, I'd buy a hybrid in a heartbeat. I've grown fond of the smaller SUVs, and I covet the Ford Escape Hybrid. I really like the regular Escapes, but when I was in the market for my current car, they were still too new, and we couldn't find one in our price range. My dream car, though, is the Lexus RX330 Hybrid. In the light metallic blue. *drools*

So while my dream car IS a Hybrid, it's not the kind that would get 87 miles to the gallon. I think it's about 33 MPG for the hybrid SUVs. I still want one though. Someday...

My mom has a CRV and loves it - I wish Honda made a hybrid version. And the Ford Escape is adorable - I've considered looking at that, as I haul a fair amount of junk (although the Prius is way bigger inside than I would have guessed).

Thanks for responding! :)

THere's a hybrid Honda Accord, but they put a V6 engine in it and it only gets between 30-35 MPG.

I know - WTF? My 12 year old Accord got that new! A Honda mechanic actualy told a friend, btw, that the 6 cylinder Accord hybrids throw rods and not to get one.

And Corollas are great cars.

You just saw An Inconvenient Truth and you're only CONSIDERING getting a hybrid??? *shakes head* Although Em's Civic sounds pretty damn awesome.

Anyway. It's easy for me to be judgmental seeing as how I don't have a car. ;) And I shouldn't throw stones since my dream car is a Mini Cooper (but then a Prius! Hee.).

Yeah, well, sort of bought one. A Prius. Just now drove it home.

Must now go drink heavily at the thought of the money I just spent. :p
