Changes to the Nielsen ratings?

Nov 06, 2006 07:06

This is an interesting article from Variety on possible changes to the Nielsen ratings. chanel19 and I were just discussing this yesterday - wondering how network television will have to evolve, as more and more people record to TiVo and DVRs to watch after airing dates. Variety says this:

CBS exec veep-chief research officer Dave Poltrack said that he's ( Read more... )

not really a poll poll, studio 60

A.) Yes, one TV, I have combined high speed internet/cable TV service. In my living room.

B.) I try to catch Heroes, House, and Veronica Mars every week. Other than that....I don't watch TV.

C.) I will catch the above listed programs if I don't see them live should I miss via friends who record/TiVo them and share. I may occasionally watch something else via video/other recording if I think it's really worthwhile, but that happens like three times a year.

D.) Yes.

I'm so behind on VM, and I think you're the one who maybe hooked me on it - I need to play catch-up.

A. Do you have a television/television reception?
Yes, but no cable... just the local tv stations.

B: How many hours a week do you watch?
If you asked me 6 mos ago I'd have said 1 hr a week, if that. Today it's about 2 hrs a day. Ugh.

C: What percentage of programs do you estimate that you watch 'not live' (i.e. from TiVo/recording/other means)?
I tend to miss at least one show a week that I'm interested in... Studio 60, Heroes, Amazing Race, Survivor, etc so I download it via usenet. So to answer your question, I'd say about 10%

D: Do you skip commercials?
Yes. When I download an episode, the commercials are not included.

Hee - if it helps, I've been seriously hooked on Voyager, and can't seem to stop. :)

A. Yes. I'm ashamed to admit it, but we actually have three TVs. Three TVs for four people, two of which are children. We have cable because we live in the boondocks and we wouldn't even get the basic channels if we didn't have it. Our cable service is also tied to our internet service. I'd probably get rid of the extended cable if it weren't for that reason. (And Project Runway and the Disney Channel. I used to be a slave to the Food Network, but it's programming has been terrible lately ( ... )

BTW- do you mind if I friend you? You always have such interesting polls-that-aren't-really-a-poll. :D

You like Sports Night, Northern Exposure, and Firefly? Of course - friend away!

Sweet! I've got some recent photography posts under FLock that might interest you. (Then again, most of the pictures are of my children, so maybe not. ;D)

1. The travel dvds - are you netflixing them, or finding them through the library? I'm thinking about a couple of trips next year and would love to see some visuals - I was wondering where to look!

2. You sound like a girl destined for a TiVo one day. :)

I get everything through the library! The main library has an extensive collection of travel DVDs and videos, and then 56 (of 75) branches have DVDs that I can order from. The branches have similar collections since they're centrally ordered, but some have Rick Steves, some have Rudy Maxa, some have a different brand I'm blanking on (Globetrotter I think). I've probably gotten around 30 total on a combination of France/Paris/England/London/Scotland. So yeah, I'd try your library!

Heh, as for tivo, until they fix it so I never hear anyone say that tivo cut off the end of a show, I'm not getting it. :-)
