Interesting post! I relate to what you are saying about fear. I think that most of what people think of as fear is just grinding anxiety. Worrying about stuff, as you say, like dandelions and shoe choices and what kind of ice cream to buy. Most people don't really have a lot of actual fear in their lives, which is good, but I think it also leads to being "afraid" of smaller and smaller things.

i think this is very true, and it can be really weirdly debilitating

i also think that's why they interview ppl who've lived thru the war in WWII in Europe and look back on those years with acute nostalgia and 'those were the best days of our lives .. we were so alive, etc' I know i saw that somewhere but don't remember now

I think a lot of people involved in the war effort (like the people at home, working towards supplying soldiers and so on) probably felt a great sense of purpose, and of being part of a community that put aside their differences to work towards a common goal. People really come together in times like that, in ways they don't when things are going well. I'm not sure if all soldiers felt great about the actual battles and so on, but again, there were likely times of great comraderie ( ... )

i also thiink about Holocaust survivors and how so many of them lived to be over 90 - if you can survive that, you can survive anything

i agree with you 100% re last point - i try to challenge myself in small ways all the time when i find myself getting too 'comfortable' - even things like making uncomfortable phone calls. It's for the best

I'd not thought about it in years til you mentioned it above. You prompted me to write about it in my journal. It wasn't my scene, but clearly my friends got something out of it.
