What do they all have in common?

Lol, this book I'm reading now talks a bit about the Republic and Plato in general, and all I could think of was nooooo, not the cave! Evil Barney! Ahhh! Poor Dr. Kennedy...

But our illustrated version was awesome. :D

Community: either building or lacking/losing.

Plato: Utopia
Aenied: Founding the Roman Empire
Whitman: Back to nature/individuality
Things they Carried: The community the guys have at the beginning, the main character loses when he gets hurt. Also the soldier upon return to the U.S.

The first two are centered around the identity of the community, the second two on the identity of the individual in the vacuum where community ought to be. They're also chronological in this respect, more modern pieces departing delving more into the individual.

Bellah, therefore, is obsessed with finding the perfect New England Community (his own version of Utopia) which he exemplifies in his church community. All of his negative examples are of individualism (either with obsession with self in the psychologist chapter or the guy with his alligator moat).

Huh.
