Hip Replacement: A New Adventure

On Tuesday January 29th, the nice surgeons at Kaiser Oakland are going to build me a lovely new right hip joint. I can't say I am wildly enthusiastic about having more surgery (I thought I was done! Really!), but I am definitely enthusiastic at the prospect of being able to sit, stand up and walk again without hurting. Nine years ago I had

My Dad has had both hips replaced, so when I talked to him just now, I asked him about what he went through with his. (He's had both done). Expect them to have you up and in a walker the same day as the surgery, or the next morning latest. He said he was able to sit up pretty well, maybe with his feet up a little, within a week or 10 days of the surgery. All in all his comment was "They don't mess around - they get you up and around right quick". For reference, he's also had one knee replaced (This is a man who did heavy construction, walking the high steel putting buildings together for 35 years), and he says that knee replacement is much worse. To the point that he's avoiding getting his other knee done for as long as he can because of the long and painful recovery process. He had the hips done within 1 year of each other.

I'm going in to Kaiser Oakland on Tuesday 01/29, and will probably be there until sometime on Friday 02/01 after which I will be home in Alameda. If you and/or Walkyr can come to see me, that would be wonderful!
