A Day in the 'Burbs (Field Observation)

Last week I spent time in San Francisco exploring graduate schools in the area.  I stayed with a friend who lives in the Mission district which is basically the Latino district. This experience is very interesting to me since I grew up in Southern California. Now, mind you, I lived in a very poor hispanic part of San Diego but STILL, that kind of living is not even comparable to the kind of poverty that exists elsewhere in the world. So I often struggle with this particular issue and my boyfriend who grew up in the burbs and you know, never had to deal with anything remotely difficult in his life :-) was complaining about the burbs and "status symbols." I suddenly realized, and was quick to tell him this, that you must come from a place of EXTREME privleage to be able to COMPLAIN about the fortune you have had growing up. It was a stunning realization though I think now that it should have been obvious to me. In a way, I think we all choose the battles to fight and though it would be ideal if everyone bought fairtrade everything and organic, local everything, I think realistically we all have to choose our spheres of influence. I think it's interesting how you put things into perspective and you viewed your experiences from different lenses. For an example you look at your experience through the eyes of an experienced traveler and at the same time you can asses your situation with a fresh pair of eyes. I think this is a good way for dealing with culture shock as well as being able to really experience a culture.
