Questions:
#4: Russian, Chinese, and Mongolian are the most predominately spoken languages in Mongolia, though English is widely used in Ulaanbaatar today. Mongolia suffered under Manchu rule for several centuries and during this time Chinese became a popular language to learn in addition to Mongolian. Odd Tippling was such an amazing story though I was muddled about the details until Chris was able to give some good examples in class. I really like the utter dismay the traveler was experiencing at first and how it morphed into a much stranger and complicated situation before suddenly fading away completely. Study Abroad Plan
I will be traveling to Mongolia during the Spring quarter of 2008 to study human rights there. I will be working with the Alliance for Human Rights organization, helping them draft applications for grants to support their various social programs. Sweden anyone?
So I found the reading in WAC to be interesting but I wish there had been more examples outside of a Swedish context. It would have been interesting to read about students traveling in more Eastern countries. Not that I'm discounting the experiences in Sweden, I just feel that there will be many "different" kinds of conflicts in the Eastern world.

While I was reading Writing Across Culture, Wagner and Magistrale talk about the need to develop a “new paradigm” (pp 13) and often our own paradigms will cause us to misinterpret or prematurely judge an entire culture based upon initial impressions.
