One of my best friends went on a Sound of Music tour with her ex-boyfriend, and said it was probably the best thing she did in Europe. I was basically crying while she showed me the pictures.
I've heard nothing but good things about Sound of Music tours, even from non-fans of the movie :) I mean come on, besides seeing the movie locales, you get to see some gorgeous scenery!
I was in Salzburg back in 2006. I didn't do the Sound of Music tour, but it's a wonderful city!
How far in the future is this trip? I know an excelent little hotel there, just in the middle of the city near all the nice spots. It's small, has character, and not that expensive. It's possibly my favorite hotel room I've ever been in.
I'm hoping for March or so...that way I'll have been working for a little bit and can take nice little trip.
What was the hotel? I've been reading reviews of the Pension Sandwirt.
I seriously just sat down and started reading and making notes, so that when it's time to actually make the plans, I already have some of the legwork done ;b
I went with a group of law students and we had 3 hotel choices. The one you looked up may be one of them (I can't remember the name). I have the information somewhere, so I'll have to check it out. I do know that the people I know who stayed at the hostel hated it, but that may be a different hostel.
The hotel you looked at (http://www.eurocheapo.com/salzburg/hotel/pension-sandwirt.html ???) is on the other side of the river than the rest of the tourist stops in the city apart from one. The hotel I stayed at is the Golden Ente. It's directly on a side street from the Cathederal and in quick walking distance of Motzart's birthplace and pretty much the rest of the major city. Plus, I know they had a number places around there that would arrange a Sound of Music tour (including, I believe the hotel). It's more expensive, but I felt it was charming for a night or two, plus it was right in the middle of everything
