Isn't professional soccer kind of the chess of the contact sports? I mean, people either watch the World Cup out of ardent love for the purity of the sport or nationalism! When's the last time you heard someone say something like "I really like USA this year," without it being followed or otherwise accompanied by an idea like, "I fucking LOVE SOCCER!" or "USA RULES!!!"

In contrast, I like to follow basketball with the easy gait (suggestive of jumping bandwagons) of a Buddhist at market. But maybe my view is badly tinted by soccer's rampant hooliganism! Maybe I conflate the passions of the drunken brawler with that of the racist jingo to easily, but they often seem equally visceral and mindless.

Dilettantes exploiting sport for their bloodlust! Connoisseurs like you are too far and few!
