MAN, your thoughts on it are so.. good and spiritual. i always thought that it was about a young girl whos life has already been wasted and she knows that shes going to HELL but she buys drugs to make her feel like shes in heaven, because being bads the only good when you have been condemned. yeah, thats my thoughts on it. but i think i like yours better. but the fact that the band was WASTED when this song was written is most likely correct and it has no definate meaning.
yea thats another meaning that i think is right but i felt like writing about something somewhat happy lol. this is one of those songs that can mean anything depending on how you interpret it. zeppelin even says theres really no meaning to it. just whatever you want it to mean. they dont know. they were high when they wrote it. but i read somewhere else that when plant wrote it someone was building a deck on his house with like a stairway to this like terrace with all these flowers and such which he condidered to be heaven. so he was like "buying a stairway to heaven"
some people even think its about the lord of the rings. im not sure about that for this song but i know for a fact that several other of their songs are based on the lord of the rings books.

yea i agree with the god thing. its definitly her trying to get into heaven...and im not to sure about them being high. it think even if they were, they would still know the meaning of the song. and did you check out that website where it plays the song backwards? im not sure if its real or not.
