Today just fucking sucks

So today is a front-runner for the "worst day ever" award for me. To preface, I'm in the hospital again because my PFTs were low, and I got a PICC line in my right arm on Tuesday ( Read more... )

Having had such trouble with the PICC's, have you considered a port? I was really scared to have one, but now that I have it... it's SO much easier, less painful and I don't know what I was nervous about. Actually, I do. They never properly explained what it was to me, and I thought I'd have something sticking out of my chest all the time. Like a PICC just higher. But it's really tiny, and just a bump. And I'm sure if I could gain some weight, it'd be a lot less noticeable too. I totally recommend it if it's an option for you.

I also think that if you're unhappy with your doctor, you should look into finding someone else. I know it's a pain in the ass, but you deserve the BEST care possible. Hope things get better.

This is only the 4th PICC I've had. Of course, getting clots on 2 out of 4 is a pretty crappy track record, so I might be better served with a mediport. I'll probably ask my dad about it when I see him tomorrow. This is only my 3rd hospitalization, so ideally I wouldn't need anything permanent since I hope to get my health in better control to prevent any more hospital stays.

To be fair, I wrote this post when I was feeling pretty alone and miserable. I'm not exactly cheerful now, but having an emergency visit from my boyfriend has made things less mind-blowingly terrible. I think I would have been virtually inconsolable if he hadn't rushed over to be with me.

I've had my fair share of problems with PICC lines (first one I ever got was a really traumatic insertion and causes major anxiety for me every time now). So I feel your pain and your frustration with incompetent nurses. If we CFers who are well-versed in medical jargon and procedures we have to know just to take care of ourselves have to deal with this crap, can you imagine how many hospitalized people are out there who don't even know when some incompetent or ignorant (granted, probably well-meaning) nurse messes something up? How many misadministered medications, duplicated procedures, missed symptoms of fairly major side effects like blood clots? *shudder*
