challenge question 1

okay, let me start off by saying the two titles i've read (twilight and boy meets boy) don't really fall into what i'd consider "sexually explicit young adult literature," to use the Pattee article title.  so i don't see how any teens or pre-teens reading either title would consider it even vaguely informational in that regard.  not like forever, ( Read more... )

driving the passion car through life with no brakes will only end badly

This is why I might never be a "pure" academic - I'm far too attached to lines like this. :))

Of this week's books, I think only Forever... easily fits into Pattee's category of sexually explicit texts. I see the others as fitting more into her point that YA literature can be a source of information about the feelings that go along with all the "how not to get pregnant or dead" factual stuff.

maybe that's a 'problem' with YA as 'learning' texts? it would be great if they could be informative in sexual matters, but to do so would then flirt with the perceived 'pornography' labels.

as it's been said a bazillion times before, in this country you can show deaths by the truckload. but a bare bottom or two individuals engaged in a naked but loving embrace, NEVAH! OMG! etc.

pardon my french but no wonder this country is so fucked up.

(lol, time for bed)

Indeed. As you can probably guess, Forever... does get labeled as pornography from time to time. So does the more puzzling What My Mother Doesn't Know!

A neat example of what you're talking about: the "young readers edition" of Anne McCaffrey's classic SF Dragonflight takes out one minor reference to rape, but mostly concentrates on taking out references to a married couple having sex.
