Artwork Quicky_Bang MatchMaker Challenge 2019-2

Feb 17, 2019 16:38

As a mod, I know what abundance of awesome fics is still available in the quicky_bang MatchMaker Challenge and I couldn't resist going for a double date to pick another short story to play with. It did take me a little longer than the two weeks I had planned to get the art finished, due to emergencies in other communities I had to take care of. Then I had issues photographing the papercuttings, but eventually, only four days late, I got it all together, yay! Here's the result (and a glimpse of the many different versions I made behind the scenes;)

Title: The Noise of Many Waters
Author: whispered_story
Artwork by: beelikej
Medium: Papercutting (& water;)
Characters: Sam/Dean
Art Rating: PG | Fic Rating: NC17 | Word count: 2852
Summary: In Kentucky, in the middle of April, Dean kisses Sam for the first time.

Alternative Banner
All the scenes in this fic are somehow connected to water, so I thought of ways to incorporate water/drops in the papercutting.
Originally I had this idea of using a wet window as the view from the Impala. There wasn't any rain while I was working on this, but in my own archives I had a couple of photos I made on a rainy boattour. I photographed the papercutting in front of on of those photos:

I also played with spraying water on paper and experimented with other backgrounds that looked like droplets. Not all of those were a succes...

The Making Of

Pencil sketch and deciding on papercolours. That patterned paper will represent the Winchester plaid:)

As I explained in my previous artpost, for these "quickies" I always search for shortcuts (haha). Another method to speed up the cutting process without copying the drawing on the back of the coloured paper, is to trace the elements with the coloured paper underneath and cut the impression line.
Before I start cutting, I have to I change my knife, now I'm ready to go!

One by one I put the elements together, I slightly fold the paper for the front seat for a 3D effect.

I originally make Dean's hair yellow and use my traditional brown for Sam, before I find new shades of blond and brown in my Christmascard collection.

I think their knees need to be bigger, but first I'm going to focus on Dean's hands, those are always a struggle.

So many circles on the dashboard, I find template shapes for all of them, yay!
I'm not happy with the steering wheel, so I replace the gold paper with dark yellow.

That colour turns out to be invisible on the dashboard background, so I experiment with bleaching it with correction white before recutting the whole shape in a light yellow. (I add details with pencil;)

I reorganize the papercuttings on a black background and cut out the window for the next step...

I have a set of rainy photos from my boattrip at the 2017/2018 LightFestival, I choose one of those wet look images for Sam & Dean's point of view from the car.

Oops, almost forgot the windshieldwipers!

Photoshoot time. With light coming in from the side, I can't capture the colour of Dean's hair properly. Turning it upside down works better as this only lightens up Sam's darker brown:)

A short and abandonned effort to put Dean's eyes in the backview mirror.

Other experiments with water

I play with watercolour pencils and aqua brushes that sillie82 gave me for my birthday.

I spray some extra water on, but am not really crazy about the result. I clearly need to practice more with these pencils for my next project.

Water on blank blue paper is a fail too.

Oooh, what about my bead curtain in the kitchen (don't mind the dirty dishes, I'll do them eventually...)

With the paper blocking the light, I have to add a flash to capture both the image and the curtain. It doesn't have the desired effect. Oh well.

When I notice the pattern of my wallpaper, I have to check that with Sam & Dean too. I quite like this!

Eventually I do get back to papercutting and I like that these paperdrops fit with the rest of the image.

So after fixing all the oopsies of paper fingers (and my fingers) being where they shouldn't, I do a final photoshoot with these paperdrops before I add text in Photoshop.

The end.

Sources
As a reference I used this image that I found on Twitter/WeHeartIt/Pinterest, without any credit *sighs* (a reverse image search didn't help either).
The dashboard was based on a screenshot of Supernatural (from S11Ep04 Baby, grabbed at Home of the Nutty) plus close ups from an 1967 Impala for sale at SM Classic Cars.
Sam & Dean's shirts are a patterned paper design by Rebecca Green, from FLOW, Book for Paper Lovers, edition 2014.

Thank you, whispered_story for offering your lovely Sam & Dean story in the quicky_bang. I adored every water scene, it was hard to settle on one for the banner, but this line made the decision for me "Dean sometimes rests his hand on Sam's thigh, a warm sure weight that leaves Sam's skin tingling even through the layer of his jeans." <3
