Can anyone guess, without consulting a reference work or google, what "rude mercat" meant in 16th-century Scots?

ruddy merchant? Though I suspect "rude" actually means something like healthy, or possibly red. A bit of context wouldn't go amiss.

But of course! Without the context, variants are possible. (Although I often find myself thinking that in Older Scots context doesn't help one bit. :))

On the right track with "merchant", and "red" would certainly be a possibility.

rough market? Although that sounds too much like a bad scots accent speaking English maybe.

The kind of market (much practised in the Borders region in days of yore, as I hear) where you acquire but don't have to pay?
