I took this from
tju_tju_tju_tju. I'm obviously not very good at writing on the fly (and I've never attempted any sort of SongFic)...but at least it's a demonstration on how random my music collection is. :)
1. Pick a character, pairing, or fandom you like.
2. Turn on your music player and put it on random/shuffle.
3. Write a drabble/ficlet related to each song that plays. You only have the time frame of the song to finish the drabble; you start when the song starts, and stop when it's over. No lingering afterwards!
4. Do ten of these, then post them.
Sam Winchester (Supernatural) - PreSeries
#1 London Calling - The Clash (3:24) Age:19
Sam hitched the strap of his backpack higher on his shoulder, pushing through the door of his dorm room. His roommate glared at him as he moved to his own bed and Sam did his best to ignore him.
The novelty of life on his own had worn out weeks ago and the approach of finals was pushing him to his limits, emotionally if not physically.
Falling back on his bed, Sam pulled out his cell phone, flipping it open to scan through his contact list. It'd been three months since his last contact with his family: a brief phone call to his brother to let him know he had a new number. They didn't chat once the number was exchanged, awkwardly hanging up on each other.
Would Dean even answer if he called?
#2 It's In The Way That You Use It - Eric Clapton (4:12) Age: 9
He'd always had his brother wrapped around his little finger. Knew just what to say or do to get what he wanted.
When he was nine, he learned the hard way that when Dean said he'd do anything for him, he truly meant it. Sam was the one who had to call their father from the hospital waiting room to tell him why he and Dean were in the Emergency Room instead of waiting in the motel room as they'd been told.
All because Tommy Bates had shoved Sam a little too hard at recess and big brother Dean had found out.
Too bad Tommy had a bigger brother. Dean had needed stitches. Plus a cast.
After that, Sam started fighting his own battles.
#3 The Living Sculptures of Pemberly - Dario Marianelli (Pride and Prejudice soundtrack) (3:04) Age: 20
He met her at a party. His first, actually. They spent hours circling the house around each other, making eye contact across a room only to find the other gone when they moved in that direction.
His roommate had tried to get Sam to talk to a pretty girl he'd gone to high school with and Sam had spent over an hour trying to get away from her annoying chatter about subjects that seemed like they should've stayed in high school.
When he finally caught up with Her, she was on her way out the door.
"Hi," was all he managed to say. But it got a smile out of her.
#4 I Say A Little Prayer - Aretha Franklin (3:34) Age: 21
"You want to go to church?" Jess asked, sounding mostly confused. Sam turned and looked at her and smiled.
"Why not?"
"It's just...since when have you been all religious?" Sam shrugged as he dug around for a tie.
"It's not like I've ever been non-religious." Jess put a hand on his arm, waiting for him to look at her. He sighed as he obliged. "One of my...uncles...was a pastor. I guess church just makes me feel close to him. Close to my family."
Jess frowned. "The family you never talk about?" Sam tensed and looked away.
"Doesn't mean I don't miss them," he whispered so low she didn't hear.
#5 The Fragile - Nine Inch Nails (4:36) Age: 20
It was his first attempt at a solo hunt; mostly because he hadn't spoken to his father or his brother in six months, but someone had to do something. People were dying.
He wasn't expecting the spirit to be in the middle of trying to claim his eighth victim.
The girl was in full on Freaked mode and Sam had no clue what to do. He didn't exactly have a lot of experience in giving comfort and what he really needed to do was get her the hell out.
But she looked so fragile and scared, he knew he couldn't just grab her and drag her away.
"It's alright," he told her softly, hiding his handgun behind his back. He edged closer to her when she didn't scream and slowly knelt next to her. "I'm here to get you out."
"Don't leave me," she screeched, suddenly throwing her arms around his neck. He rocked back on his heels, startled, but he kept them both from falling.
"It's okay," he promised. "I won't leave you. I'm here to help."
#6 Girls Got Rhythm - AC/DC (3:24) Age: 17
Sam was as awkward as most seventeen-year-old boys. The growth spurt wasn't helping much and kept him in a perpetual state of unbalance.
Then he'd met Carrie. The girl was insane, but gorgeous, and for some reason seemed to have a thing for him.
It was his first relationship of any kind, but with a brother like Dean, he hadn't entered it naive. So, three weeks into the relationship, when she asked him if there was any way he could borrow his brother's "hot car", Sam knew what that meant.
Dean wouldn't miss it for a night.
#7 How Do You Say Goodbye - Engineers (5:19) Age: 18
Winchester men didn't cry. It was in the Family Rule Book. Sam knew, he'd made it up in a nice construction paper booklet when he was nine.
It didn't stop the tears from falling.
At least he'd gotten out of the apartment before it'd started. If Dad or Dean saw him...
Sam sniffed loudly and reopened the envelope in his hands. Full ride. He'd applied on a whim. He knew he was smart, but hadn't really expected to use it. Winchesters were hunters, after all. But here was his ticket to a different future. A future without blood and ghosts and unconscious family members.
Could he leave them though? He loved his brother and his father. It wasn't discussed, of course, but he knew they loved him too. Well, his brother loved him at least. His father seemed to have his days. They were still all he knew. He had no experience in the world away from them. And he knew this was an either/or decision. There'd be no coming back.
How could he tell his father his life wasn't what he wanted?
#8 All For You - Sister Hazel (3:38) Age: 13
The brothers stumbled through the motel room door and Sam struggled to stay upright. His brother had a good fifty pounds and five inches on him, though and the younger brother was glad, for once, the room was so cramped. You couldn't walk anywhere without running into a bed.
Dean groaned as he bounced slightly on the bed. "Wasgonsammy?" he slurred. Sam got out from under his brother's arm and bent to pull off his sneakers.
"You're drunk, Dean," Sam said tiredly for the tenth time. "You're lucky that cop didn't press charges for minor consumption."
"Wha?" Sam rolled his eyes and focused on getting his brother under the covers. "I won'go fer you." Sam looked at him, confused.
"What? Go where?"
"School."
#9 I'm Like A Lawyer With The Way I'm Always Trying To Get You Off (Me & You) - Fall Out Boy (3:32) Age: 21
He'd warned them not to let him drink. But they'd been too busy getting drunk to pay attention.
Somehow he found his way to the alley outside the bar and his phone made his way to his ear before he even knew he'd dialed.
"This is Dean. Leave a message." Sam's heart was pounding and his mouth opened before he could stop it.
"Deeeean," he drawled out. "You're missing a party man." Sam swallowed. "I miss ya man. Didn't mean what I said. It was just...Dad. Ya know?" Sam slid down to sit on the damp pavement. "Come see me. You can't salt and burn Sammy." Sam giggled.
#10 Cut Me Up - Har Mar Superstar (3:12) Age: 22
For the third night in a row, Sam woke up in a cold sweat. He rolled over quickly to touch the form next to him, reassurance it had only been a dream. Jess shifted in her sleep, turning toward him.
Brushing a strand of hair away from her face, Sam memorized her features. She reminded him of an angel when she slept. So why was her face so prominent in his nightmares?
There'd been blood and fire too. His life had had plenty enough of both to explain their presence.
But she'd been on the ceiling. Where Dad had always said Mom had been.
"You're gonna give yourself a headache if you keep staring at me that hard," Jess mumbled sleepily. He kissed her lightly.
"We've got Tylenol."
