Just watched 'Money for Jam' on the box. I was quite happy with myself, after reading on their show that the average household spends $281 on weekly groceries. I'm pleased to say that our average bill is $150 to $200

Well, that mother would be shocked at us...our weekly grocery bill is usually between $100-$150 (and that sometimes even includes pull-ups and nappies)! I can hardly believe the average bill is $281!
I'm not sure why ours is so much lower than the average? We don't buy many expensive cleaning products (i make my own); we don't eat a lot of meat and when we do it's cheaper cuts - we eat stacks of vegies; we don't tend to buy ready prepared jars/packets of sauces, flavour bases etc, as we make our own. We don't buy soft drink or many other snack foods; we bake our own cookies (and soon will have a go at bread!). And we trawl the catalogues each week to hunt down the specials. I guess it adds up after a while!
When G and i were first living together, our weekly grocery budget was $75. I once proudly mentioned this to G's mum, who exclaimed in horror, "What are you feeding my son? Rubbish?"
Now that's impressive seeing there are 4 of you. Cool that you make your own cleaning products etc. Also nothing like the smell of baked bread in a home. Having a dog is expensive, we buy 4 cans for Ben per week and they are around the $3 dollar mark. That mother I was talking about, the two parents are overweight etc, so it doesn't surprise me that they spend a lot on food. We do eat a lot of meat, seeing my iron is very low. Joy and I have instructions from the dr etc. Did you end up watching the show, btw?
No, i'd not even heard of the show before...if i had i would have watched it. When is it on? Yep, cat food adds to our bills too...but we wait until it's on mega special then buy up bulk...it saves a bit. My iron is probably a bit low too...have always had a problem with it in the past, since we don't eat much red meat. I have a slip for a blood test to get it checked, but i haven't had time to go!!
The 1st episode of Money for Jam was Wednesday 8pm on Channel 9. I watch the Today Show and there were plenty of ads during that. It really is a rehash of 'Money', but they are focusing on things you can do just do from home. Eg: This lady makes cakes. So she runs a business from home, makes a cake a week and they calculated that she would make around $10,000.00 a year just buying turning her hobby into a business.
