Huh. I really enjoyed this. I have to admit, I've always felt uncomfortable in church settings where talking in "tongues" is the norm.

I've heard of this, but never experienced it myself. I'm glad you were able to find peace and hear what you needed to!

This reminds me of several churches I've visited when unable to attend my own, over the years. My reaction and results are usually similar to yours.

I know this has no real relevance but this story came to mind -

About 15 years ago as a church we went away together for a weekend. After such an energetic fun filled weekend this wonderfully funny larger than life elderly lady who was sat next to me fell asleep during the Sunday afternoon service before we went home. She started snoring really loud. I wasn't sure whether to nudge her or not but before I got chance she woke up. I told her that she'd been snoring, her reply..."Oh no worries luv... we've 'ad a busy weekend. I don't care if I snored to be honest, I'm tired. If anyone says anything I'll tell them I was 'restin' in the Lord!'" lol! Since then if anyone from church ever tells me that they are really tired or feel they may fall asleep I always tell them not to worry if they do and to just tell everyone that they are resting in the Lord. :D

Nice. I like how it takes a somewhat unexpected direction. I read an article recently in the "Fortean Times" that charismatic practices like speaking in tongues are on the rise in England. It's interesting, because that's the last place you would expect it!

I know in the 80s there was a "charismatic movement" in which this caught on in a lot of U.S. congregations.
I think there are a lot of people who search for something "real" in their faith, and with this you get instant feedback, a sense that "something is happening" -- and if others around you are doing it, too, you not only don't feel silly but gain that connection to the others.
