This was one garden chore that Lyle didn't mind.

He sat on the wide wooden swing, his feet just touching the porch floor enough to rock it gently, shelling green peas into a bowl on his lap. Beside him sat a basket of freshly-picked full pods; on the floor nearby a box caught empty pods as he tossed them.

While still work, it was easy. And he got to ( Read more... )

Thanks. I wanted to try a "pastorale" this time. And if it doesn't work, it's a nice one to go out on.

Oh, this is just lovely! Takes me back to similar ays from my youth, in which we had a garden the size of a football field on a 10-acre lot, responsible for much of the family feeding from canning jars over the winter. Except, of course, I was the youngest and the only girl, but, still... I know this scene all too well. Very sweet. 😀

This is based on my folks' garden which was about that big. We had about 13 acres and had the garden, chicken yard, a few cattle and occasional pigs. When I was in high school, we had two freezers, one full of veggies, the other full of meat. At that point we had a very small grocery list.
