I’m gaining perspective on the old phrase, “ignorance is bliss.”

When you are a child, how often are you aware of how much danger is around you, under your feet?

It amazes me sometimes to look back, think on things we did as kids, nearly oblivious to the hazards. Some parents freak out about children riding unrestrained in the back of a pickup; I ( Read more... )

I think the difference is country kids vs city kids.
My farm cousins had that freedom -- living in the city, I did not.

This is wonderful, and brings back memories of my own more care free childhood and adolescence. And though I am not a parent, I can understand the instinctive caution you must feel when it comes to your children.

My grandmother was before her time as far as being hyperaware of all hazards...probably excessively so. I didn't play outside (supervised or not) much as a child. So Mamma Faye if you are up there....you are winning the culture war.

Yikes, eesh, this was painful to read, well done. I was always an extremely anxious kid. When I hear friends' stories about things they did, my overly cautious hands tremble.
