All I see

I’m gaining perspective on the old phrase, “ignorance is bliss.”

When you are a child, how often are you aware of how much danger is around you, under your feet?

It amazes me sometimes to look back, think on things we did as kids, nearly oblivious to the hazards. Some parents freak out about children riding unrestrained in the back of a pickup; I ( Read more... )

I felt this to my very bones. When your kid is a daredevil with no fear, you see ALL the dangers laid out in front of you - except the ones you don't!! Ha.

I relate to this a lot. Being an attorney, I'm trained to look for liabilities and dangers. A busy parking lot is a huge trigger for me. I wind up seeing all different ways that people can get hurt. Sometimes it's hard for me to enjoy public spaces for this reason- I just see danger around every corner!

Next to me is a corner bound in barbed wire - what were we thinking?
It's so true-- as a child, you don't see most of the danger. As an adult, you think,"Well, i'm smart enough to avoid it." But once you have kids...what WERE you thinking?

Kids are pretty durable, except when they're not. When he was little, our son broke his arm playing kickball when he slipped on a slick base. Kids are pretty lucky, given their ignorance of danger in some of the things they did. I think my parents were satisfied if there was not some obvious life-threatening danger.
