That was my number one rule with this: whatever I was doing, Dean still had to be Dean (and by extension, Sam had to be Sam). In its earliest incarnations, this was Dean in high school, still being a bad ass and a ladies man despite never saying a word . . . that story still might get written, too.

Wow, what a cool AU. I love the reveal at the end with the real reason why Dean doesn't talk and that fact that Mary is still alive and out there doing the hunter thing. The contrast between her leaving the kids off with friends and John taking the boys along is striking. Especially since Dean still got into hunting anyway.

Oh, definitely. Half the fun of this was imagining the sorts of secrets Mary might have kept, and how she might have reacted differently from John because of them. . . .
