I couldn't imagine being in business to prey off other people's greif.  Now, I don't begrudge people an honest living - I expect a mark-up on the items needed for a funeral/cremation.  However, what the funeral home we encountered tried to do to us (and I am sure to every grieving family that has ever walked through their doors) should be criminal ( Read more... )

Born Jeanette Zimmerman in 1918 in Garfield, NJ - she was place in a convent in Massachusetts with her 3 sisters at the age of 8 when her mother passed.  The nuns changed her name to Jane as the convent cow was named Jeanette (how nice of them...).  She remembered the police coming in to her home when she was a little girl and taking the bathtub ( Read more... )

My grandmother has been having heart attacks since this morning - they don't seem to stop. She is no longer even on a heart monitor, just oxygen to help her breath easier. Watching the monitor was getting to my mother and I - seeing the spikes and valleys, watching her blood pressure drop to almost nothing and then come back up. The sinking, gut ( Read more... )

I've been wanting to get back in to cake decorating as I use to dabble in the late 80s - early 90's and always enjoyed it - mainly piping work. I had never even heard of fondant till the last few years. I found a few good fondant recipe's online and made my very first fondant cake... it leaves a lot to be desired but not too bad for a first.

My 90 year old grandmother almost died tonight from a kidney stone blocking her only functioning kidney. I spent most of the afternoon and all of the evening at the hospital with her - She was transported from the local (read: small town) hospital to the city. So of course I had to stop... one of my favorite clothing stores that is going out of business. So, $100 later, I walked out of the store with... (insert drum roll here) 5 pairs of Jeans, real jeans - not wanna be jeans, 5 pairs of knit pants, 6 shirts, 1 long robe, 1 nightgown, and 1 bra. An average of $5 an item.. not too shabby!

I have had lots of homes in my lifetime - though most were rentals. Even with the rentals, they were still "home", but they never truly felt like "Mine". Partially because I've tended to have a bajillion roommates over the years and when you have roommates, you have to compromise on the decorating, set-up, where the measuring cups go, etc ( Read more... )
