I'm really glad you had that last phrase in; it really changes the dynamic between them into something more equal. Whenever I read about relationships, romantic or otherwise, where one partner is willing to be second, is willing to suffer for the sake of the other in a consistent way, with 'loving' them being the only real reason for it just makes me uncomfortable. Even with a confession or reciprocation or acknowledgement, I know what that feels like and it feels terrible. So I'm, physically, relieved. I hadn't even known there was a weight on my chest until you lifted it

Balance is definitely an issue. Might make you feel slightly better to know that the reason John is able to accept Sherlock running off on cases here is that John did used to be a surgeon. That means being on call, that means needing to run off for emergencies he cannot control, and that means he's definitely left his own dates in the lurch in the past. Bit of karma there, as he looks at it.

In canon, the degree of co-dependence can vary a bit, but for all Watson shows that he's forever willing to drop everything for Holmes, Holmes is continually asking Watson to come along. Also, he refers to their rooms at Baker Street as theirs even long after Watson moves out. It's a more subtle kind of attachment (except for when someone shoots at Watson) but it's thoroughly, definitely there.

I always enjoyed your Doctor Who fics, and I'm greatly enjoying this one as well. Now I get to go back and read all the rest of your Sherlock fic - yay for the promise of good ficcage in my near future. I like how you've got Sherlock's relationship with John twisted up with his leg, and whether or not the relationship will be over once the leg is no longer causing him problems. I know where I'd like that to go, but I'm a romantic at heart; I look forward to seeing where you take it and how.

GOD! I LOVE THIS! The whole story has been excellent thus far but I found this chapter to be especially brilliant! The explanation of how Sherlock's mind works and the moment when he realizes John gets it; gets him - perfect, simply perfect.
