I got the processor part of my implant yesterday and hooked it up.  First, there was kind of a hearing test with the implant hooked up to a computer.  Then we programmed it and turned it on.  I'm not really able to describe the "noise" I can hear.  Let's just say I can hear stuff, though not sounds as they really are.  Had some problems right off ( Read more... )

Just popping to say I'm now home and resting.  Thank you all again for the well wishes.  :)  Hopefully, I'll be up and about soon.

Well, the surgery for the cochlear implant in my left ear is set for this Thursday, January 20th.  It'll be at University of Iowa Hospital and will take about three hours.  I don't know the exact time yet; the hospital will let me know tomorrow.  I'm a little nervous as I've always hated hospitals, but I have confidence that the doctor is the right ( Read more... )

My Mom passed away this afternoon.  We got word from the doctors of what we had feared: the she was brain-dead.  She had just been deprived of oxygen too long.  We were half-expecting it, but it was still hard.  Dad and I both knew that she wouldn't want to be kept alive like that so we told them to turn the machines off and then we stayed with her ( Read more... )

I just spent most of the day at the hospital where I had an evaluation to see if I'd be a candidate for a cochlear implant in my left ear. The good news is that seems I am. I got some more information on the implant and the surgery, talked to the surgeon (had to wait almost two hours to talk to him for two minutes), then had a CT Scan. I ( Read more... )

So much for voter anger against the government. Almost all of Iowa's incumbents won re-election last night. The main exception was our Democratic governor who was ousted by the Republican challenger. This guy was governor in the 80s and 90s and while he was decent, I can't help feeling in electing him that we're looking back rather than ( Read more... )
