I cringed too at the direct quotes, but they were also timed to add humor during tense spots which is a perfectly acceptable strategy AND it felt like the characters weren't forced into saying them, that they actually built up to those points in very logical ways. Even though they're in a new timeline, they _are_ the same characters.
I agree on old Spock, it felt like they spliced in clips from one of the boring self-referential celebrations of past glory films that killed the old franchise. It was so wrong to the rest of the style of the film.
The real Dr. McCoy was a lot calmer and sardonic. This one was agitated and sweaty. Maybe that was it.
