Errr...although I've never eaten there, my friends from Hong Kong have always told me to avoid it. Expensive for bad food.
Since I don't drink, I can't recommend any bars but when I wanna stay with the peeps, I go to Mongkok. Its where all the sneaker stores are, the tight little buildings with 5 floors of toys or electronic games or bootleg cds. I think its on Temple and Nathan. You could get lost just walking around. I also like going to Langham Place in Mongkok. Its a new mall they built about 5 years ago with 5 story escalators, a spiral ramp from the top to the bottom and cool stores like the Muji store.
Mongkok is a very industrial area but the city (?) seems to be active in beautifying it up as well. Also embedded in that area is the street market, stores and as well as the red light district so tons of people are hanging around, which makes for good people watching or people pocketing. So yea, be careful.
awww! sorry to hear you didn't have a better experience. did you have a local show you the way, or did you guys explore on your own? but you're right, the food wasn't all that spectacular. we did have a handful of good meals that were comparatively cheaper to their american counterparts. The expensive fare that incorporated HK flavors wasn't all that great (at least we didn't have to pay for it, lol). The fancy fare that incorporated various foreign flavors were much better, but still lacked the culinary skills you would normally find elsewhere - and was therefore justifiably cheaper.
HK probably isn't an ideal location for foodie enthusiasts, imho :).
But thankfully there are enough things to do that should keep travelers busy for a week :)
I ran a good 20 miles already since arriving (but I have blisters from walking around everywhere, so I probably won't be running anytime soon - probably when I get back).
But yes, I did have macaroni and ham for breakfast. How didja know? lol.
We're a little bit too old for the night-life scene, haha. We didn't know each other between 2004-2006, but my LJ was action packed with liver-destroying weekends that started on Wednesdays. Same goes for my wife, lol. But we do have some alfresco dining on our itinerary and some lounge-y rooftop bars on our schedule as well.
And despite my efforts, there's a good chance my diet is screwed. Wait, it already is :)
Time to double up on the training when I return next week :)
I finally booked my ticket to HK for Christmas/New Year's actually, so I'll have to ask for your recommendations in addition to what my friends will tell me :)!

we're trying to stay away from the touristy spots. we prefer to explore and discover hidden finds (that are safe).

Be careful out there. My dad and his wife went there recently, then he called me when he came back to Thailand to talk about his acquired swine flu.

we had our flu shots just a few days ago. I'm hoping that will keep everything at bay.
hope your dad's recovering speedily :)
