Memorial Day weekend went by much too fast this year. As usual I spent most of the weekend at the Folklife Festival, reconnecting with my old dance crowd. This year our London transplants were back for a visit with their Morris team in tow, so many of us now-retired dancers showed up for a reunion. Saw the usual blend of great dancing, music and ( Read more... )

I really noticed it more than ever on my last trip - you don't find almost any kind of celebration of any kind without there being broken glass just EVERYWHERE.

Granted, I was there over New Year's, but it was a fairly peaceful crowd, maybe a little loud at times, but no major fights. And STILL there was broken glass underfoot in all of Central London. I guess that's just a "tradition" we don't have.

Maybe they need to switch to plastic cups and bottles like they have at all the venues here. But it hasn't been that long since glass bottles were still available at the ballpark, and I don't remember any broken glass.

Still, I'll take broken glass over being a block away from a murder scene, which happened the last time I went to the Seafair Torchlight Parade. I imagine I'd feel safer in London than I do in certain parts of Seattle at night.

That sounds like a lot of fun.

And I'm glad I've never seen a public brawl... I'll just write about them in my Bree fics...don't need to see them. :-D

This business of making friends who live an ocean away is hard on the tear ducts.

Oh, yes. LJ has definitely taught me that.

Folklife is always fun, and I think the peacefulness is the exception, because there have been public brawls at other hard-drinking events like Mardi Gras night. And if you watch the news they show them over and over... Ugh. Maybe that's why I don't like reading about them as much.

It's too bad that supersonic transport didn't catch on. I want a way to stay closer to my friends as they scatter over the globe. *sigh*

This post has been on my mind off and on, especially with Comic Con coming up and another Lost Weekend for you and I haven't seen you around LJ much. It can be teary to say goodbye but what I love and hold onto is that we can keep in contact via LJ, email and chat at a click of the mouse. I remember the days when I had a penpal in Australia and it took forever to get a letter. Some friends may be an ocean away but they're so much closer than they used to be!

Hope you have a great time in Houston, wish I could be there.

*hugs*
