I've been on a real fantasy kick lately. Character-driven stuff. George R. R. Martin pisses me off because of all the schadenfreude, but I have fallen in gaga love with Sharon Shinn, like I mentioned in my post.
For reading at work, I want stuff that's lovely and immersive.
Recently I've really been enjoying the Honor Harrington series by David Weber. (Ok, so that's sci-fi)
Some of my favourites, some by Australian authors, so I don't know how easy they will be to get your hands on.
The Ashuak chronicles: 'Blood', 'Passion', 'Freedom' by Tony Shillitoe (Aust) are an excellent set of Epic fantasy.
The Magician Guild trilogy and The Age of Five trilogy both by Trudi Canavan (Aust). Both trilogies concern magic and changing paradigmns.
Dark Heavens Trilogy: 'White Tiger', 'Red Phoenix', 'Blue Dragon' by Kylie Chan (Aust). Contemporary fantasy, draws heavily on Chinese myth.
The Tamir Triad: 'The Bone Doll's Twin', 'The Hidden Warrior' and 'The Oracle's Queen' by Lynn Flewelling. About a girl who is brought up as a boy in order to become Queen.
The Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman if you haven't read it. The fantasical elements draw directly on African diaspora/Ghanan folk tales.
They actually have very different feels. I couldn't stand American Gods. I felt it took too long to get where it was going. Anansi Boys being marketed as it's sequel was just that marketing. Gaiman was Not Happy.

I have a few book suggestions, but I don't know how into 800+ page novels you are...James Clavell has been a long time favourite of mine.
