Draco couldn't say he was overly into being at any kind of party, but he had a feeling that his absence - if noted at all - would have been used against him at some point in the future. So there he was, picking idly at the food like it was still rationed, and generally looking awkward as he watched everyone around him with a sort of vacant interest.

Ruth spotted the young man's picky appetite and came up next to him, her own plate laden with food.

"Is that all you're going to eat? Or maybe you had a big meal before you came?"

"Well, I-" He started, glancing over to the woman almost nervously before pursing his mouth into a bit of a line. "What's wrong with not gorging myself? It's not precisely dignified."

His eyes dropped to her own plate, wondering if he had just put his foot in his mouth; too late to just take it back though, and there was no point either.

"Don't really care if it's dignified," she replied with a shrug. Overindulging was on her list of sins she just had to accomplish while stuck in the city. "Guess it matters to you though."

"So you plan on that, do you?" Draco had to ask. Brow raised disbelieving, and mouth curved into a bemused sneer, he popped another morsel into his mouth before looking her over. "Yes, I do believe it does matter to me. I'd rather not eat us into another famine, thank you."

"Oh," her mood deflated a little, and now she looked over the tables nearly overflowing with food. "Do you think we're likely to have another one?" She had arrived right at the tail end of the famine, and luckily hadn't suffered like others had.

"Oh, probably not," he simply drawled, rolling his eyes. "Not if the acting Magistrate has anything to say about it. Pretentious, uppity-" Draco cut himself off then, pursing his lips simply.

"By all means, stuff yourself. Don't let me stop you."

"Sounds like you don't like this Magistrate person." Taking his cue, she started forking potato salad into her mouth. She couldn't let it go to waste, after all. That would be like rubbing it into the faces of the people who died in the famine!

"I went to school with him," Draco offered, refusing to say much more on that topic. It wasn't like it was overly important anyway.

It was interesting, however, to note that she really didn't seem that bothered by the idea of shovelling food into herself; at this point, Draco was just beginning to wonder if she had manners at all. "Is it good, then?"

She nodded, making a 'mm hmm' sound as she chewed. Ruth might not have enough manners for Draco's taste, but she wasn't going to talk with her mouth full.

At least she had that going for her. He nodded his appreciation and acknowledgement of her noise, returning to his relatively silent picking at the food beside him.

She stood there awkwardly, assuming he didn't want to talk with her anymore. Finally, she said, "The hummus is good," and pointed to it on the table.

It was less that he didn't want to talk to her, and more that he had nothing to say. Small talk with total strangers was hardly his strong suit.

But he glanced back towards her all the same when she spoke again, raising one brow. "I've never had it before. What is it?"

Glad to see he wasn't going to ignore her, she perked right up. "Me neither, until today! This woman I was talking to earlier said it's chickpeas and olive oil, which I know doesn't sound like much, but it's really creamy and good." She waved a piece of pita, then dipped it in a bit of the stuff on her plate.

"You can dip these pita pieces in it. Or veggies or whatever you want, I guess."

At least one of them was talking; it was far more comfortable than the previous silence that had been nearly stifling. His brow couldn't get much higher as he stared at her, before swiping a piece of pita from where they sat waiting to be devoured, and delicately dipping it into the aforementioned hummus.

"...that's different, isn't it?"

"Yeah, it's new and different to me, but I'm liking all this stuff." She gestured around to the tables of food, filled with many things she'd never had the opportunity to try before now.

"So are you from England? I have friends from there, back home I mean."
