This is Saïx, making his appearance like a good employee.

This is Saïx, standing on the beach in his black Organization coat.

He doesn't seem to be trying especially hard to enjoy himself. He's just kind of... standing there, watching the tide come in and out. This beach looks just like all the others he's seen on other worlds. It's a particularly pretty beach, yes, but still, it doesn't hold his interest.

He only has to be here long enough so that Owen will stay off his back about it later, so this is Saïx biding his time.

"I've experienced higher temperatures," Saïx says idly. "This coat is better at deflecting the weather than it seems."

For a moment, he's quiet. "Events such as these were extremely rare in the Organization I used to work for," he says finally. "There was no point in attempting to create emotional bonds, as we are not capable of them. The importance of my attendance to such a thing, even now, escapes me."

"Perhaps it is not important to you to create emotional bonds," Ianto countered, with a shrug, "but such is not the same for the rest of us. It would benefit you to try and enjoy yourself here, get to know a few people. You never know who you might end up needing to call on, despite every precaution you may have taken otherwise."

In a place such as this... He would need to call on another for information, and he has access to much of it. He shakes his head.

"That has not proven itself to be true." He's made it this far. He didn't start out alone, but he certainly ended up as such. This is something he can deal with. He shakes his head. "That is not to say I do not value teamwork and will not work with others, but it has been seen that I function best alone."

That isn't true. No matter how much Saïx says it or believes it now, it isn't true.

Ianto knew that it wasn't true. Ianto wasn't about to believe the other man trying to convince him otherwise. "Be that as it may," he countered, "the same cannot be said for the rest of us, and if we're to work with you, we should be able to know who it is that we're working with. I realize that it may be asking a lot of you," he said, "but like I said. It would be doing us a favor if you could do this for us."

Saïx is quiet for a moment. There are multiple things he could say here, and he must make a decision on what to do.

"I must be especially valuable to Hellsing, then," he comments dryly.

"Every member of our organization is a valuable asset," Ianto countered, seriously. Maybe Saïx didn't believe such a thing, or maybe he thought Ianto was just having him on, but it didn't matter. In the end, he'd listened to Ianto anyway, and so long as he would keep listening, maybe there was a chance. Ianto was all too familiar with those with more difficult personalities, after all.

At that, Saïx is quiet again, contemplating the meaning of words and how they change depending on who uses them. The way Ianto says that, he is just using polite, if slightly detached phrasing. Saïx can tell he means this in an emotional way; it's clear in his tone, in his face. But if he himself said it, if anyone in the Organization said it... Those words would be cold. "A valuable asset" meaning "a useful tool."

"It is amusing," he says idly, "how here, it is seen as a good thing, but if one such as I would say such a thing..."

Ianto shrugged in response to that comment. "It's all about the intention behind your words," he said. "It's about the fact that when I say it, I'm focusing on the good of the team as a whole, and not as your function and use. Hellsing isn't some sort of tool kit to use at my disposal. I understand that all of you are people too. I can only hope that other people will be as understanding."

Humans are strange, Saïx finds himself thinking. He has trouble imagining seeing the world through Ianto's eyes.

"One can hope, yes." There are several ironies to the statement. Saïx cannot hope; Saïx is fully aware he thinks of Hellsing, and all other people, as "some sort of tool kit to use at [his] disposal"; the fact that Ianto likely knows this, but intends to treat him as a person anyway. That suits Saïx perfectly fine, but if he could be amused, he would be especially so.

"Have I fulfilled the required amount of time for attendance?" he intones now, as if he's missed the point.

"Well, I had intended on torturing you with a bit more mingling before I let you go..." Ianto said in return, joking back at the other man. Sure, he understood that the other man wasn't going to really appreciate his humor, but. That didn't mean that Ianto couldn't joke around all by himself, nonetheless.
