The hostel needs more people on security. Anyone out there who has experience and is looking for a job?

[Locked to the 11th Doctor.]

Your two weeks were up on Thursday.

{ alexander anderson, the doctor (eleventh), { alex, lance blackthorn (au)

[Yes, he heard the message.]

[And yes, he's ignoring it. You're probably going to have to come find him.]

[Lucky for Lance, whenever he happens to head up to the sixth floor, the Doctor will just happen to be in his room. =3]

[ When there's no response, Lance makes a special trip up there just for the Doctor, knocking firmly on the door (and wincing a little at the throb in his knuckles when he does so. This darned power ...).

Then he waits--mostly with patience--until either the Doctor answers or it's going to become clear he won't. He has a key, after all. ]

I'm not here! [...and that was definitely the blurt of someone whose mind was otherwise occupied before they spoke. You can probably feel the wince through the door.]

[A few seconds later, the lock is undone and the Doctor opens the door, smiling in that no-I-certainly-didn't-just-make-an-arse-of-myself way.]

Hi.

[ Oh he feels it alright, and is even lifting a sort-of incredulous eyebrow when the Doctor opens the door. ]

Hi. S'your phone broken?

[He looks over his shoulder, toward the phone which is resting on his bedside table.]

Ah. Yes. [He checks his watch.] Two weeks.

Here's the thing, Lowell... I kinda like it here. Not ready to move house just now.

[He wasn't looking forward to this, but he can admit when he's been caught, so let's cut to the chase:] You're short-staffed at the moment, yeah? What sort of stuff d'you need? I'm good with stuff.

[ The Doctor gets a mildly exasperated look. ]

Wasn't going to chuck you out if you have skills to offer. We need a chef, a janitor and more security personnel.

Not really among my skill set. [He can cook, but for the amount of people at the hostel? Not interested.]

[He looks up, gestures at the light fixtures in the corridor.] What about electrics? Have you got someone for maintenance?

[ Automatically he follows the gesture, but he's already shaking his head when he looks back at the Doctor. ]

No. You can do that?

I'm a wizard. ...Not - an actual wizard; I should be careful about using that term around here. But I am very good.

Yeah? Can you show me?

[ Not skeptical, so much as liking confirmation. ]

[He holds up a finger in a 'hold-on-a-second' gesture, goes to his bedside table and brings back the scanner he built. It looks like a wall clock with fourteen hands.] I made this!

[...and then he takes another look at it.] Right, probably not the best example, especially if you're not familiar with multiphase technology. [He tosses it aside. CLANG.] Got anything that needs fixing? I'll fix it.

One of the elevator lights is sporadic.

[ He turns, gesturing, to move down the hall, and then adds purely out of curiosity, ]

Mulitphase?

[On the way out the door, he grabs his jacket.]

Phase as in phsyics, multi as in... lots of 'em. Efficient way of getting multiple phases happening at once. Good for compressing a lot of different types of information into the same small space. Sort of like a computer only you can build in your garage. Well - suppose you could build a computer in your garage. If you were good with computers.

[His room isn't far from the elevators, so that little speech has taken them all the way there. He presses the button.]

You can pocket data?

[ It comes out automatically, in his surprise, because 'compressing' things 'into the same small space' sure as hell sounds like pocketing things (just like pokemon). ]

What kind've information?

I can pocket lots of things. Paperclips, sandwiches... screwdrivers. [At that, he reaches into his jacket pocket and draws out the sonic screwdriver, gives it a little flip-toss and catches it again.]

...I was trying to learn something about the nature of this place.

No, I mean ...

[ He lifts his hands, pauses, and then shrugs. ]

Compression. Into a small space, just a shade of a dimension apart from this one. So the thing holding it can hold a ton of energy, but only takes up a bit of space on this side. S'what pocketing is.

[ He steps into the elevator (skirting the Doctor) and moves to the corner, pointing up at the flickering light over the button-dash. ]
