So what does a guy have to do to get a job around here? I've been looking, but most of these places are not the most friendly working environments I've ever seen. [ And he's worked with demons! ]

My strongest suit is... [ Ergh. Pause. It's harder to say than he even imagined, like something is making him even warier than usual. ] ... magical stuff ( Read more... )

[dryly, and mostly to himself:] When in doubt, ask the network.

How, out of curiosity, does one specialise in 'purely intellectual magical stuff'?

It's getting answers, isn't it?

Studying.

Sometimes.

You study. Absolutely no practical work?

Maybe some.

[ It doesn't seem like this kid is offering a job, so Chris doesn't feel the need to try and be frank with him. There's a reason he was vague about it, while still hopefully saying enough to draw interest. ]

[he's not redirecting to his bosses until he knows this guy is qualified; the last thing he needs is someone like this on his name.]

And are you and your vague answers having any luck actually finding takers?

Yeah, actually. Already had an offer. [ And it sounds like he might be getting another. ]

Well, far be it for me to see if you deserved another, then. I'm sure everyone's dying for purely intellectual magical stuff. [yes, he's still on that. Gods, the vocabulary there is killing him.]

[ Never talk to his aunts, Draco. His vocabulary is incredibly tame compared to theirs. ]

You're really hung up on that, aren't you?

Look. What I meant is that I know a lot of things about supernatural creatures and mixtures from years of studying, but I'm not magic myself. Thus the "purely intellectual".

[he'll make a point of that.

[and yes, he is. But he's not acknowledging that he was ever asked.]

How in the world could you know all of that, but not be magical yourself?

[ Chris considers the non-answer a victory, just so you know. ]

That's personal. What matters is that I know it.

[Draco considers Chris an idiot, though. So it evens out.]

I really don't see how that is what matters. In my world, you'd be Obliviated faster than you can say 'Quidditch'.

Well, we're not in your world, are we?

[ Beat. ]

... What's quidditch?

[ He can at least infer that Obliviated is something bad, and it would be better not to ruin his credentials completely right off. ]

There's more than enough people from my world for it to qualify.

A game played upon broomstick.

I don't think it works like that.

... On a broomstick. Okay.

What?

About a week.

Are you serious? I mean-broomsticks.
