How, out of curiosity, does one specialise in 'purely intellectual magical stuff'?

Sounds like your mind's already pretty set. What I can tell you is that there are plenty of non-aggressive creatures out there who could care less about people or just want to avoid them. You don't actually see a lot of those. Then... there are the tricksters, and sometimes you run across the ones you actually need to look out for.

Whatever they are, a lot of them can be useful if you can make it worth their while or know how to handle them.
