this He hates that he’s hurting her. He hates that he can’t make everything better and perfect and work. He hates that what he needs and wants doesn’t have room for her. She’s everything to him and yet he can’t give her everything she needs.
How can it be so complicated to be in love? He can’t find the compromise they should strive for. He kisses her for what he’s pretty sure is the last time. He can’t come back. He isn’t sure he could leave. For the same reasons she’s staying, he has to go.
He holds her hand, looks in her eyes. Tries to find a way to solve everything so they can be together. If only he could think of something. Love isn’t enough. He always thought it would be, but it isn’t.
He can’t say “I’m sorry, Rose.” He drops her hands and turns away. He wishes with every fiber of his being it could be different. He wishes he were a better, stronger man. He’s running away and hurting the only person who matters.

AJ squints as he stares at the horizon. The sun was setting on another day. He enjoys the quiet. He’s at peace. This is the most he’s been able to breathe in ages. Nothing can touch him out here.
Nothing can fill the hole in his chest, either.
Rose.
He wonders if he made the wrong decision. He should have stayed. But he couldn’t, not there. He’d have suffocated before long. Even with Rose, each day would have been torture. His brother had been growing worse and AJ wasn’t sure how to stop him.
His only chance was escape. He ran to California and never looked back. It was the best decision he’d ever made. Except for Rose. She had to go and mess everything up. She’d always been throwing a wrench into his plans since he first met her. He loved her for it. He’s certain he’ll never love anyone like he loves her. There isn’t room enough in his heart.
There are stacks of letters in his room. He stopped sending them, stopped writing them, stopped reading them. It hurts too much. He doesn’t know how to say “I love you, I miss you, I can’t be there for you.”
Years pass. He’s too selfish, stupid, and proud to contact her. He hates himself for it. Not a day goes by that he doesn’t think of her. Until he hears his brother’s died.
The company’s in shambles. His father begs him to return. AJ asks to think about it.
But he knows there’s nothing to think about. There’s nothing to be scared of anymore.
So he hops on a plane and finds her. He hunts her down and shows up on her door step. “Hi,” he whispers as she opens the door, beautiful as ever.
