My "attached garage" is actually a New England-style attached barn, and houses up to 4 highway vehicles, a tractor, chickens and a whole lot of other stuff.
My garage is unattached. While your home ins might be less expensive if you don't have one, your car insurance is likely less expensive if you do have a garage (of any sort).
My grandmother uses her attached garage as extra fridge space in cold weather. One of my precious childhood memories is of the delicious smell when I walked into her garage in October or November when she'd stocked up on several bushels of apples from the local orchard.
I'm not certain whether this is relevant or not, but most of my childhood was spent in a free-standing home with a *detached* garage (in case that's more of a blight on society for those who would answer "True" to the first question.)

As you probably know, I am currently shopping for a free-standing home with attached garage space.
I want a free standing home because I have grown tired of listening to peoples' loud screaming domestic arguments and thudding techno music coming through paper thin walls. One of my SOs lives in a modern-construction townhouse with paper-thin walls. Laugh at something on TV and the neigbhors are pounding on the walls for us to quiet down. *AND* if I were to buy such a place, I'd be paying just shy of half a million dollars for the privilege.
I want attached garage space because I own a motorcycle. Even if I could structure my life to be car-free, motorcycles are still fun, and I'd still want one, even if it were only a leisure/fun vehicle. Unfortunately "pay someone else to work on it for me" is not an option. Those of you who've read Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance know why. Bike mechanics haven't changed much since he wrote that book. Good ones are like HBBsunicorns. They're not impossible to find but
( ... )

About the "stacked like cordwood" thing, Heinlein is wrong. If you consider insects "animals", ants and termites and bees ...etc are stacked like cordwood. You can also consider any pack animal, or some herd animals.
