as i was saying.. he will be fine.. just don't feed as much or as often.. he should recover on his own.. there's also something about feeding him a bit of a cooked and peeled pea..
the thing is, i know that overfeeding can cause probs, so i usually feed him every other day. he's not bloated and there's no sign of swelling. The only thing is, he can't eat pellets, shrimp, or worms coz he misses them/ is blind in one eye. on teh advice of some people here, i've been feeding him chichlid flakes.
i also did a full water change ( he's in a 5 gal) about 2 days ago, if that makes a difference. he's almost 2.
aww..poor lil fishie guy!! i'm sorry, i don't know what to tell you.. if it were me, i'd fast him for 2-3 days.. see if there's any improvement.. good luck and keep us updated!
If he's floating until you get his attention, and then swimming normally and not fighting to get lower in the water, it wouldn't be a swim bladder issue. Swim bladder issues mean the swim bladder can't regulate buoyancy at all, so the fish is either stuck floating or stuck sinking, and has to fight to move to the opposite level.
At his age it is likely to be constipation and fasting him for a few days then feeding the inside of a cooked pea should help him.
Either that or he has developed an eccentric new game (look at me Ma I'm a sun bass!)
If he starts to look bloated you can add some epsom salt to the water. It will help relieve any pressure on his swim bladder. Otherwise it is likely going to take day or so to for the symptoms to show up and clarify the situation.
There is a slim possibility that he has developed an air bubble if he happened to take an unexpected dive to the bottom of his tank when you were trying to put him back in. If that's the case you will just have to wait it out and see where it goes...I would carry on with treating him as if he was constipated though since the odds really favour that being the case.
I use the plain drug store stuff (make sure there is nothing added to it like fragrance) and add one quarter of a teaspoon per gallon to start out with. If you have already added salt you will need to change out that water for some without salt first and be sure to dissolve the epsom salt in some tank water before you add it so you don't add burns to your fishy's troubles.
okay, i've put him in a hospital tank for observation. I lowered the water level, put in epsom salt, cleaned off a hidey hole for him. Now that he's in such a small tank, i notice his anal fin is shredded at the bottom. could i be dealing with swim bladder issues of a bacterial nature? if so, when to start medicating?

Fast him for a few days and see where that gets you.
Also, if he's two years old, it could just be a sign of his age. As they get older, bettas will often have swim bladder difficulties.
