Thank you for posting this.

I enjoy leading worship, and it definitely has a performative aspect. I feel a little awkward and embarrassed to think about what I do as performance, but that's (part of) what it is. It's also much more, but it would be foolish to ignore the performance aspects. In leading worship I of course have to think about the content and intention and so on, but I am remiss if I do not also think about voice projection, physical placement, breathing technique, and all that.

I'm fortunate that in my religion lay people have opportunities to lead (though not as many as I'd like in my community).

Thank you for the post. This resonates with some of the thinking/doing in my life recently. Would love to chat about it - a group is in the process of forming as we speak, and I think it might be of some interest to you. Will you, by any chance, be at Arisia?

Good for you! Matters of spirituality these days are so tied up with weird feelings about religion vs. the need for spiritual growth and feeding. I truly admire the dedication and sensitivity you bring to the sharing of faith and helping people feel connected in their common spiritual beliefs. I know you will do well in pursuing this path of spiritual leadership.
