He is a REALLY cool guy too. When I was in college, he did a show at my school, and we had Jazz Band rehearsal beforehand. He came in and sat down and listened to us, and then worked with us a bit. The guy is without a doubt a genius. Talk about a great experience.
I read somewhere that he absolutely refuses to play that song, it drives him crazy. I imagine if I was a talented musician who was only known for one early success I would feel the same. What little I've heard of his music is pretty fun though.
He cut a disc with Yo Yo Ma which is a good listen. It's generally not my cup of tea, since I have my ear tuned more into prog rock and heavy metal, but it's something that occasionally slips into the CD Player and I enjoy it quite a bit.
I'm told that if you get a chance to take a workshop with him, especially vocal improv, that you should not miss it. Haven't had a chance directly, but friends have described in great and loving and awed detail...

Remember that he wrote it intending it as a song song by a man about to jump off a very tall ledge. Thus the "It will soon pass".
