Twenty one people on the subway this morning were reading something written by Dan Brown. This both amazes and worries me on so many levels. What happened to the staples of intra-city travel; Dick Francis, Margaret Atwood and for the truly pretentious, De Beauvoir or Plath?

See, that I can understand, it's a phenomenon contained toward a certain (if shallow) demographic. But Dan Brown? Who died and made him the next multibillionaire demographic-crossing author?
But seriously, that shallow market that's targeted is filled with twelve-year-old girls who convince their moms the books are wholesome. And they're spreading.
Dude. You even seen Kate Brian's contribution, or that 'Clique' book thing? I read at the local library on Wednesdays, and just. So many worlds of no to reading that aloud.
Ostensibly, some people enjoy reading books in which the sentence 'Her smile was magic' appears on the first page. I did try to finish it. It may have found its way into the fire. Mysteriously.
